CROP INSURANCE

The Federal Crop Insurance Program is an affordable way to make sure wholesale nurseries get the coverage they need to protect their crop. Nursery Crop Insurance is available for field grown and container liners, plants and trees. Covered perils include adverse weather (wind, hail, flood and freeze) as well as wildfire. Insects and disease damage are covered if there is no known effective control measure.
Nursery plants can be insured as one combined unit known as Basic Unit By Share (BUBS) or by Individual Plant Type known as Basic Unit By Plant Type (BUPT). Insuring the nursery as one unit means that the entire nursery must meet a single deductible before an indemnity will be paid. Insuring by plant type (foliage, annuals, palms and cycads etc.) separates each plant type as its own unit with its own deductible. If the nursery has a particular plant group that is more susceptible to a peril (cold weather for example) than other plant types, this option might be beneficial. In the event of a claim for this example, only the deductible for the damaged plant type must be met instead of the deductible for the entire nursery. Two inventory revisions are allowed per unit per year to increase reported values.
